A different way to be great!

                         Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.  Mark 10:43

Shockwaves went out across the NBA horizon yesterday as Kevin Durant made his decision to transition to the Golden State Warriors.  Soundbites and social media chatter abounds as to whether or not he made the right move.  Now I must admit that I’m a bit of a NBA nostalgic.  It’s hard for me to fathom what it would have been like to have Magic, Michael  or Larry unite for a NBA season or two.  However the purpose of this post is not to give my own opinion as to whether it was right or wrong for KD to leave OKC.

     First of all I give him much respect for doing what he thought was right for him amid all the criticism that he knew would come with it. In addition, his courage has caused me to ponder a few questions which I hope you will also consider: 

Is he weak for joining a winning team?

Can he be just as great by uniting with a great team?

Obviously KD felt this move was the right move for him as a player.  (BTW remember what’s right for you may not seem right to everybody else).  I’d like to share how we like KD can make the right move and have a new definition of greatness.

1.        Can't I be great if I'm allowed to add value to a great team?  Ironically, the same Warriors fans that were hating on KD a couple of weeks ago, are now celebrating him because of what he will bring to the team.   But I submit to you that great players not only bring their amazing ability level, but also an amazing attitude that says, “I choose completing you over competing against you!”  They do not feel the need to strangle the spotlight to be a star or hog the headlines to be a hero.  What would our world look like if individuals prioritized  making things better over being bigger?

2.        Can't I be great if my desire is to develop my potential?  Is it possible that joining the Warriors will not shrink KD but actually stretch him?   In fact, KD mentioned that one of the main reasons for the move was his growth not only as a player but as a man.   We often fail to remember that great players have a need to be challenged not only by the predicaments they encounter but also by other great players.  Imagine what will arise from the daily conversations and competition among championship caliber teammates.

3.       Can't I be great if I'm willing to emphasize that the end game is what really matters?  After the colossal defeats that KD and also his new team experienced by both blowing 3-1 leads, they now have one thing on their mind- an all-out desire to win. When this desire is prevalent, it’s no longer about personal agendas or accolades but what really matters is accomplishing the goal of winning. 

      In conclusion, our culture continually emphasizes only one characteristic of greatness which is, having the ability to carry others on your shoulders.  It’s the trait that many are delighted by and can no doubt be defined as great. ( If you don’t believe me just look at what Lebron just did for the Land),  However we must also recognize that greatness can  be achieved when great players combine their efforts and sacrifice for the greater good.  We must communicate to individuals that it’s ok to team up and be terrific. Our churches, classrooms, careers, and communities need to know that when we have a synergistic perspective, the scope of our possibilities is limitless!

Stinking Thinking

"We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight."  Numbers 13:33

You may not be what you think you are but whatever you think, you are.  That luminous line reminds us that it is indeed our mentality that shapes our reality.  As Proverbs 23:7 says, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."  It is problematic when we begin to let pessimistic thoughts peruse the perimeter of our minds.  In the vivacious vernacular of my father,  this is what is known as, "Stinking thinking".  What is stinking thinking?  Well the text above delineates in detail what it means to have this manner of  mindset.

In the text, the people of God are parked on the perimeter of their Promise land possession.  Because they are on the border of their blessing, they are given a vision, or a preview of coming attractions.  12 spies are chosen to check out the land and after 40 days report the results of their investigation to the rest of the congregation.  They begin by stating the enormous opportunities awaiting them in the land by saying, that it was good and "flows with milk and honey" vs. (27).  However it was at this point that stinking thinking began to surface as 10 of the 12 spies flipped the script and started talking about the eminent obstacles blocking their path.  Below are the characteristics of a stinking thinker.

1.  Stinking thinkers are pessimistic vs. (28).  In the face of something positive, 10 spies were determined to focus on what they assumed was negative.  We all know people just like this who have the tremendous talent to always believe and bring out the worst in the face of the best!

2.  Stinking thinkers are phobic vs. (29)- They report that there are fighting people in the land and since they are farmers, they are powerless to prevail.  Because of their cowardly demeanor, they lacked the courage and confidence to conquer.  People like this are always too afraid to step onto the stage of an opportunity because of "what could happen", or what "could go wrong".

3. Stinking thinkers reject the promises of God vs. (31).  Despite the assurance of success that God had already given them, they waved the white flag of surrender on their situation.  It is a tell-tell sign of a stinking thinker to say no when God has already said yes.

4. Stinking thinkers have the wrong perception of themselves vs. (33)- The text says because they saw themselves as grasshoppers, they believed others saw them in the same way.  In this case, their mindset became a mirror by which others view them.  We are quite familiar with people who project onto others what they really feel about themselves!

Tragically the stinking thinking of the ten caused them to miss out on what God had for them.

My prayer today is that you will not allow stinking thinking to short-circuit your success.

Moving into a New Season!

Football fans are in a frenzy because their favorite time of year has come- It's football season!
The excitement is in the air not only for fans but also for the football teams for which they root. Teams from all over the nation are energized with expectation because they understand that it's a new season. This is especially true for those teams that experienced a disappointing season the previous year. They are pumped and primed to take advantage of a new season. That was the case for my Auburn Tigers last year about this time. After going through a horrific season in 2012 they were hopeful that 2013 would be a new and different season.

Have you ever been there? Have you ever had a disappointing season which was highlighted by setback and struggle? If we are honest all of us have had miserable moments and disappointing days that cause us to wonder when will we ever win?

Well if that's your current condition or if you are in need of a new season, join us at New Mt. Moriah this month as we began a preaching series entitled, "Moving into a new season!" This series of messages is tailored to teach that God is able to help us to successfully transition into brand new beginnings. Our worship service starts at 11:00. Stand in the Gap!

“And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.” Ezekiel 22:30

Is there someone on your heart but his or her situation is out your hand? If we are honest, there are people all around us who seem to be out of our reach to do anything to remedy, resolve or rectify their situation. I want to let you know that there is something you can do and it's called intercessory prayer. Today as we participate in National Day of Prayer, we must remember that everyday there are a plethora of issues that require our petitions. As we look at the conditions of our communities, cities, country, and culture, it is imperative that the people of God stand in the gap on their behalf.
The text above shows that in many cases without human intercession there will be no heavenly intervention!
Do you really want to see the earthly problems that adversely affect us addressed?
Then we need heavenly power that can only come thru actively engaging in intercessory prayer! From the scriptures, I want to share three powerful principles on intercession.

1. There is power in pleading to the Lord on behalf of others Genesis 18:20-32
After the Lord had revealed his plan to destroy the sinful city of Sodom, Abraham stood before the Lord on their behalf. He began his classic countdown of asking God to spare the city on behalf of 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, and 10. Interestingly, only when Abraham stopped pleading did the Lord move forward with His plan.
Are you willing to plead on the behalf of people who are perishing?

2. Persistently praying in faith gets God’s attention. Matthew 15:21-28
This example comes from the unexpected, for the woman in this text was a Canaanite. She came to Jesus on the behalf of her demon-possessed daughter. Initially Jesus ignored her request. Parenthetically permit me to say that there are times when the Savior also seems to be silent about our situation. These are just the times that we must persist, and keep on praying! This woman was not too proud to beg, believing that even a crumb of blessing from Christ could change her situation. Because of her great faith, her daughter was healed!
Note- One generation got to Jesus and another generation got the blessing!

3. Partnering in prayer can help deliver people from imprisoning predicaments Acts 12:5-17
In this text, the apostle Peter found himself in prison, on death row guarded by sixteen soldiers. To make matters worse, he was chained between two of them. However in this somber situation, vs. 5 says, “Peter was in prison, but prayer was made by the church”. We can learn a lot from their example. They did not call a business meeting, they called a prayer meeting. Miraculously, Peter was set free when the church came together and prayed. Regardless of what has gone down in the sentence of your situation, just add “but prayer” to it and watch God work!

Of course the greatest example of intercession comes fom our Lord Jesus Christ. He bridged the gap allowing sinful man to get back to God. The Bible even says that today He lives to make intercession for us!

My prayer today is for you to stand in the gap for our nation because one person can make a difference!

Absolutely Marvelous!

When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” Luke 7:9

When Jesus looks at your current level of faith, what does He see? Is your faith filled with great expectation or is it clouded by your current situation? Moreover, when Jesus looks at your faith what does he say? Does he commend it or does He condemn it? Does He applaud it or does he abhor it? In the above text, when Jesus saw a centurion's faith, He was amazed because this man's faith was absolutely marvelous! What does a marvelous faith look like? I'm glad that you asked!

1. Marvelous faith is willing to break out of the box. This man was a Roman centurion which basically meant he was in charge of at least 100 soldiers. He had position, popularity, and possessions. Today we would say he was a big baller and shot caller. However the text says that instead of depending on any of that stuff, he goes outside his normal network to a Jewish preacher for help. The text says he does so because he "heard about Jesus". Marvelous faith will always carry you beyond the confines of your current circumstance. What has God been trying to get you to hear that will move you beyond the borders of your current box?

2. Marvelous faith is willing to believe on behalf of others. This man sent for Jesus not for himself but because his servant was sick. One would think that someone that had many other soldiers wouldn't worry about losing one. However this man had the faith to focus on the needs of others. Today we live in a world, where in many instances, individuals have no problem believing for themselves. They name it and claim it, blab it and grab it, and tag it and bag it. My question is do you have enough faith to believe the best for your community, or your co-worker, or comrade?

3. Marvelous faith is willing to submit to Sovereign authority. Being one with authority and under authority, the centurion had come to understand that those with real power only have to speak and stuff happens. He believed that Jesus only had to say the word and the authority of his word would derail death! In response to this radical faith, his servant was healed. My friend, you need to know that everything in this world is still Word-activated! Trust the authority of the Word and watch God work in your world!

My prayer for you today is that you'll have a marvelous faith that brings forth miraculous things!

Rise, Shine and give God the Glory!

And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and amaze your bed, and he arose immediately."

Down is not your destiny! Let those words marinate in your mind, and sink into your spirit. No matter how life has knocked you down, situations have gotten you down, or people have let you down, today I decree that you don't have to stay down! That's the lesson we learn in the text above. The Bible declares that a brother by the name of Aeneas was dealing with a paralyzing predicament and had been bedridden for 8 years. He had the unfortunate experience of being stuck in the same situation year after year. Imagine the pain that he experienced as bed sores begin to develop as he lay on his bed day in and day out. To make matters worse think of how much of his potential was being aborted as he lay bedridden day after day.

I'm talking to someone and although your name is not Aeneas, you know something about feeling stuck in a situation where your potential, productivity, and possibilities have been paralyzed. If that's you, the word for you today is that you can rise up! The text is tailored to teach us 3 things that we must understand if we would rise above those things that strive to keep us down, limited, and restrained.

1. The Power of God is greater than any predicament. The text says that the difference making disciple by name of Peter, comes to Aeneas and tells him, "Jesus Christ heals you." Peter didnt use his name or insert some other individuals name, because there is power only in One name and that's the name of Jesus. I declare today that there is still power in that name to get you up and out of any paralyzing predicament. I don't care how bad it looks, if God can raise a dead Jesus, He can raise you too!

2. There is a personal responsibility connected to your rising up. Aeneas heard his name and believed in the power of God to do for him what he couldn't do for himself. However there was still something left that he could do, make his bed. God often does what we can't do so that we can do what we can do. I'm talking to some Aeneas who has grown accustomed to somebody doing for you. After all you've been dependent upon others for some time. Please understand that nobody is going to make your bed for you. Nobody is going to complete the application, submit the resume, enroll in the class for you. Do what you can!

3. Once God gets you up, you are a prime candidate to bring God glory. The text says that after Aeneas got up that the people in two cities saw him and believed on The Lord. Did you get that? They saw a changed life and trusted The Lord. My friend God still uses changed people to change the world. God is going to use what you've been thru to get glory out of it!

The famous fighter Muhammad Ali was was once knocked down early in a fight against a relatively unknown fighter. However he got up and later won the fight. Later reporters asked him what was on his mind as he lay on the canvas. He replied, he was telling himself, "Get up because the ground is no place for a champion!"

My prayer for you today is that you will realize that God has put it in you to rise because you are a champion!

It's Signing Day!

Then said Jesus to his disciples, "If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." Matthew 16:24

Last Wednesday was a wonderful day for many high school athletes as they signed national letters of intent. The NCAA has set aside the 1st Wednesday in February as National Signing Day. On this day, after a long recruiting process, athletes from all over the country committed to a college of their choice. As I reflected upon this event, my mind reminisced over my own recruiting experience 20 years ago. What I vividly remember the most are the coaches who were trying to pursuade me to make a commitment to join their team. In like manner, our Cosmic Coach is actively recruiting you to join his team. The text above shows us how he wants and welcomes you to be a part of the greatest team.

1. Jesus is passionate about you being on His team. He says, "If any man" vs. 24. In other words, this opportunity is for anyone and everyone. You do not have to be a 5 star player, a blue chip, or top of the class to join this team. I'm talking to someone who feels like they are not qualified, or does not have what it takes to become a member of this team, The word for you today is that your eligibility has been cleared because its based on what Jesus has already done for you!

2. Jesus has a prerequisite for you being successful on His team. Anyone can join the team but everyone who does so must be willing to give up everything vs. 24. In other words, Jesus is looking for a commitment. What coach would ask for anything less? After I signed my letter of intent to play basketball, my coaches at USM demanded a level of commitment. This included many areas such as being committed to working hard on and off the court, disciplining my body in the weight room, and abiding by team rules. In order to do this there were many things I had to give up. What are you willing to give up to follow Jesus?

3. Jesus makes a promise for those who join His team. All recruits are made promises prior to pledging their commitment. These include, the promise of a quality education, a great collegiate athletic experience, and maybe a chance to play at the next level. Jesus promises his recruits in vs. 25 that for everything they give up they will gain much more! In essence it is in giving up our lives that we really find our lives!

Have you made a commitment to join the Greatest team in History? Come on over to victory's side for you were born to win!

My prayer for you today is that you will commit to become a follower of Jesus!

Why not you?

"Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" Judges 6:14

Super Bowl 48 ended up being one of the most lopsided games in history as the Seahawks dominated the Broncos. During the game I was impressed with their defense, aka The Legion of Boom, as well as the poise of their young QB Russell Wilson. After the game, comments made by Wilson so captured my attention that I decided to make them the topic of this blog. During the post game interview, Wilson mentioned that when he was younger his late father would ask, "Why not you?" He said this in regards to Russell being great one day. Wilson went on to challenge his team earlier this season with a similar question, "Why not us in the Super Bowl?".

I was moved by the use of this interesting interrogative from this individual who refused to be incarcerated by feelings of inadequacy. After tracting his career, it dawned on me that if anyone could have been locked up by low self-esteem, it could have been Wilson. He wasn't taken until the third round of the 2012 draft, as the 75th pick. He was the sixth QB taken that year mostly because teams felt he was too short to play the position in the NFL. As a matter of fact, the Denver Broncos backup QB was even taken before Wilson! Throughout his career he has been labeled as only a game manager and hasn't gotten the same level of notoriety as some of the other QB's that were drafted with him. However Wilson has used this entire situation as motivation and has had the audacity to ask himself the question, "Why not you?"

As I let those words marinate on my mind, I could not help but be drawn to the above passage as the same question was raised by the Angel of The Lord. In the text, Gideon was selected to deliver the people of God from Midianite oppression. However, because of his own inadequacies, and his immediate circumstances, Gideon didn't see himself as much of a deliverer. Like many today, Gideon allowed his own issues with himself to become an issue. If we are not careful, issues that we have with ourself can get in the way of "the us" that we are meant to be. However I'm so glad that despite his own issues, the Angel of God resiliently raised the question, "Why not you?"

In like manner, as a messenger of God, I have the same question for you as it relates to being a person of impact and influence, "Why not you?" As it relates to being an agent of change and a difference maker in the world, "Why not you?" When it comes to starting the business, writing the book, or going back to school, "Why not you?". When it comes to fulfilling your dreams, and reaching your goals, and living a bigger, bolder, brighter, life for the glory of God, "Why not you?". My friend, the text helps assertively answers all of the above with a resounding, "Yes you can!"

First you have to Recognize your Potential. In Judges 6:12 the angel greets Gideon by calling him "a mighty man of valor". In other words he informs Gideon that he is full of potential. What's really interesting is where Gideon found himself when he received this revelation. Judges 6:11 says that he was threshing wheat in a wine press. In other words he was hiding. Because of where he was and what he was facing, Gideon felt less than qualified to be a great leader. Where are you hiding today that is hindering you from fulfilling your potential? Are you hiding behind limited resources, limited exposure or opportunities? Though each of these may be real factors, be encouraged to know that limitations do not have to limit you! God has already given you everything you need within to rise above any circumstance that you face without. Today He is saying "Why not you mighty person of valor!"

Next you have to Remember you have His Presence. After Gideon was called, he began to offer excuses to why he could not possibly be a deliverer. After all, he looked at his family as being small and he was the weakest of them all! (6:15) However God reminded him that he could accomplish his assignment because the Almighty was with Him (6:16). My friend let me ask you another question, "If God, the Creator of the cosmos, is for you, who or what can be against you?" Today passionately pursue your purpose knowing that the presence of the Lord is with you!

It's no wonder why Russell Wilson could demonstrate such cool, calm, and confidence out on the field this season. In his mind he had already answered the question of could he be a champion? Have you done so yet?

My prayer for you today is that God will give you confidence to say, "Yes I can be a champion!"

Bouncing Back from a Setback!

"It does not matter how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get up." Vince Lombardi

This season Peyton Manning has showed why he is one of the greatest QB's to ever play the game. After being written off after suffering a neck injury and missing the entire 2011 season, Manning has regained MVP form and currently has his team back on the biggest stage. I must admit that although my team is not in the Super Bowl, I have been mystified by Manning this season. His incredible journey teaches us a couple of vital lessons about bouncing back.

First, his story illuminates the idea that having painful experiences doesn’t have to paralyze our productivity. After suffering the neck injury, many questioned his ability to ever play football again. However, even at the age of 37, Manning set numerous records this season including; most passing yards, and most passing TD’s in a season. What a lesson for those currently dealing with the side effects of pain from the past. Maybe it’s the pain of losing someone or something that was dear. Maybe it’s the pain from someone that let you down. Whatever it may be, always remember that the God we serve is able to use the pain that should disable us to instead develop us for greater productivity!

Secondly, his story illustrates that sometimes let downs can become set ups! Manning helped the Indianapolis Colts become one of the most successful NFL franchises, even leading them to a Super Bowl in 2006. However, after his injury, Peyton was thrown under the bus by his former team. Have you ever experienced a letdown that knocked you down robbing you of vim, vigor, and vitality? This can be difficult especially when you're hurt by someone you've helped. But Manning shows us that even when one team thinks you’re finished, you can find another team that believes you still have a future! We would not even be talking about the Broncos in the Super Bowl had they not picked Manning up as a free agent in 2012. Just goes to show for every Colt that lets you down there is a Bronco ready to give you a ride! Let me ask you a question: Where would you be today had you not gotten knocked down on yesterday? I’m with Marvin Sapp, I’m stronger, wiser, and better not in spite of my let downs but because of my let downs!

Lastly, Manning‘s story indicates that champions are made not born. Although Peyton has a famous football father, Archie Manning, his performance on the field can be attributed to a couple of factors. Manning is meticulous when comes to mental preparation. Few players are willing to invest the amount of time and attention to detail as Manning does. In essence he is willing to put the work in. Is winning, in your family, on the job, in the ministry, worth putting in the work? Interestingly beyond the commitment that Manning displays on the field, his commitment to his faith has helped him become the consummate professional athlete. Manning has opened up about this and says faith has been number one since he was 13 years old, when he first made a commitment to Christ. For him, football has always been number four behind his faith, family, and friends. If you were to prioritize your life right now, where would your faith fall?

Regardless of who wins on Sunday, Peyton Manning has proven this season that he has bounced back to a championship level. My friend, our God is also able to help you bounce back from life’s setbacks.

My prayer for you today is that God will enable you to bounce back from your setbacks!

Making it thru the Meantime!

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

Students and staff stuck in a snowstorm! At the beginning of the day I never planned on being stuck at school. As a matter of fact my day started like any other day thankful for the privilege to educate students. However, as snow flakes began to accumulate and the road conditions begin to worsen, staff and students were left wondering would we be able to make it home safely. As time passed and the reality of our situation settled in, other questions filled our mental skies such as; what would we provide for the students to eat, where would they sleep, and exactly what would the night hold? In a real sense we found ourselves in the meantime. Have you ever been stuck in a situation in which you didn't know what to do? Have you ever found yourself in a meantime situation? The meantime is the in-between time when you don't know what to expect, and you don't know exactly what is next. If we are honest, many of our moments are spent meandering through the meantime as we are left waiting and wondering when and how our situation will ever change. Thankfully the above text teaches us how we can make it through the meantime!

First of all when we find ourselves experiencing a meantime moment, we have to be productive (Jeremiah 29:5-6). While we were stuck in the snowstorm, what started out as dreariness soon became delight. The environment was energized with the excitement and the enjoyment of playing games, watching movies, and collaborating with one another. This experience set the stage for creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to come forth. As many of my colleagues began to pitch in to make sure needs were met, we found out that they were good cooks! This meantime moment also was a time of opportunity as some of our students had a chance to experience snow cream for the very first time. Did you catch that? They were able to take something that was negative and use it for something positive! My friend, in this life we often face a plethora of problems. However God can use them to bring out the best in you! In the midst of your problems don't lose your productivity.

Next we have to be prayerful (Jeremiah 29:7). Throughout the day I found myself clothed in a spirit of prayer (Who ever said that prayer was taken out of school?) However as time passed my prayer changed from asking God to get us out of the situation, to hoping that He would just keep us while we were in the situation! This is very important because if we are not careful we can become mean during our meantime. During these moments we can also find ourselves sinking in the quick sand of self-pity. In your meantime stay prayerful allowing God to change you before He changes your situation!

Third we must be patient (Jeremiah 29:10). Despite our desire for things to happen swiftly, the reality of our situation was that we would be stuck at school for the night. Our staff had to calm the nerves of some students who couldn't fathom the idea of staying at school overnight. We did so by telling them, "Just hold on, help is on the way!" That's a meaningful message for someone who is the midst of difficulty. As the Scripture says, "Wait on the Lord: be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart." Psalms 27:14

Lastly we must be positive (Jeremiah 29:11). We were able to make it through the meantime because everyone stayed positive. During this whole ordeal our students demonstrated exceptional attitudes. Some of them even took advantage of the extra time by doing school work! Staff members had high spirits even though their bodies were tired. What enabled everyone to stay positive? The expectation of being able to go home the next day. We knew that our leaders were working on a plan to get us out. In the same way, you can stay positive in the meantime because you know our Leader, Lord and Liberator has a plan to get you out. As a matter of fact before you ever got to your meantime God had a plan to get you out of the meantime! Stay future-focused believing that His plan will come to pass.

Well I'm glad to report that we are no longer stuck in school! My mind will forever treasure the many memories that were made during that meantime experience!

My prayer for you is that during your meantime moment you will believe that God has a Plan!

GPS: God's Positioning System

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Proverbs 3:5-6 The Message Translation

While on vacation, as my wife and I were driving down the highway, we asked ourselves, "What did we ever do before technology?" This question came about as we surveyed the intricate interstate that we traveled on. Despite the city's complex highways we were able to make it safely to our destination because from the start we relied on our GPS. Of course this was far different from previous experiences without GPS. At these times I would try to figure things out only to end up confused about where I was going. Finally, after getting more and more lost, with the gentle counsel(not so gentle) of my wife, I would pull over and ask someone for directions. Imagine how much time was lost because I relied on my own intuition! Who or what are you relying on to get to your destination? Let me ask you this way, are you relying on your Divine GPS? The above text teaches us how we can allow God's Positioning System to give us direction.

First we must go to our GPS for assistance. What sense does it make to have a GPS and not use it? God wants us to go to Him about everything. Now it's often easier to go to Him about "big things" or major decisions, but we should go to Him for daily decisions as well (In all thy ways acknowledge Him) Proverbs 3:6. When we go to God we are showing our trust and dependence on Him.

Second we should get to know the voice of our GPS. My GPS has a voice that tells me which turns to take. All I have to do is listen to the voice and trust that it's telling the truth. In the same way we must listen to the voice of God for direction. He lovingly longs to provide you with personalized directions. Isaiah 30:21 says, "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” However we must get to know God's voice and we do so by spending time in His Word and allowing His Holy Spirit to speak to us. The more time that we spend listening to His voice, the easier it is to know and trust His voice.

Third we must let our GPS guide us so that we will stay on course. The thing about GPS is that it uses a system of orbiting satellites that are able to provide accurate direction. Since our Sovereign God sits high and looks low, He sees what we can't see. He knows every curve, bend in the road, and every dead end. As we trust Him for direction, He is able to lead us thru the path that He has set for us (You will show me the path of life) Psalms 16:11. My friend, life is too difficult to navigate on your own. Let God position you in the path He has for your life and I promise that you won't wind up lost!

My prayer for you today is that you will allow God's GPS to get you to His desired destination!

What would Dr. King be about today?

"The time is always right to do what is right" Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we celebrated and commemorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin King Jr. with the 10th Annual Unity March downtown Montevallo. This was followed by a Unity Program in which the powerful preacher, and professor, Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. was the guest speaker. Dr. Fallin is one who personally knew Dr. King and spent time with him at Morehouse University and as a Pastor in Birmingham. After describing what Dr. King was like during these personal encounters, he raised an interesting interrogative for us all to ponder, "What would Dr. King be about today?" I was so moved by his words that I would like to share them. By the way I jokingly let Dr. Fallin know that I would be sharing this and that all proceeds would go to him!

First Dr. King would be about eradicating the new racism in the USA. Fallin mentioned that this new racism, which is institutionalized, is often seen in the form of a criminial injustice system. I believe this is what Professor Michelle Alexander was alluding to in her book, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” when she described how the war on drugs, during the Reagan era, devasted black America. Today one out of every three black males are involved in this system either in prison, parole, or probation. Alexander argues that these males find themselves falling permanently into 2nd class citizenship when they get out. Today Dr. King would be taking a stand against this unjust system.

Next Dr. King would be about economic justice. Dr. Fallin mentioned that King spent three days at his church one month prior to his death. During this time, he was organizing support on the behalf of those in poverty. In fact, his goal was to address this issue of poverty so that it would receive national attention. Today although we live in the richest nation on Earth, poverty is still a major issue. Dr. King would be about dealing with the economic disparity that exists and bridging the gap between the "haves and have not". He would be about inspiring those with privileges to use them on behalf of the underprivleged.

Finally Dr. King would be about ending wars. Dr. Fallin pointed out that one of King's finest moments was when he took a stand against the Vietnam War. Although many opposed his views on this, includng the president at that time Lyndon Johnson, King stood strong believing it was not right to talk about non-violence in the South and not do the same everywhere. Today Dr. King would be about finding peaceful solutions to end conflicts.

As we reflect upon the life of this visionary leader, and raise issues that he would probably be concerned about, let us remember that these are things that we should also be concerned about. Let's honor his life by making a commitment to find creative solutions for these problems therefore keeping the dream alive!

Catching God's eye

"The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him." 2 Chronicles 16:9a

As I raise my kids, each day I’m amazed how much of myself that I see in them (when I was their age). I remember as a child that I always loved it when my dad would sit outside on the porch and watch me shoot hoops. This was especially true when he had company. At this time I would take it up a notch and do some super duper move that I had made up or shoot long range shots hoping to catch their eye. Now that I’m a dad, it amuses me when my son does the same thing. I guess like father like son! Have you ever tried to catch someone's eye? Maybe it was a special person you wanted to get to know, or maybe it was a supervisor that you wanted to show how hard you worked. What about our Sovereign God? The above text informs us that it's possible to live a life that that catches God's eye! Of course because God is all seeing and all knowing His eye is always on us but this text says that God is on the look-out for a life that is totally committed to Him. We catch God's eye when we resolve to rely solely on Him. Notice the reward of those who resolve to live in this manner: they receive Heavenly strength!

My prayer for you today is that you will live in such a way that it catches God's eye so that as a result you receive Supernatural strength for your journey!

Dream Again!

And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed... Genesis 42:9

Do you remember when you used to dream? Now I'm not talking about those fantasies that took you to faraway places (although from time to time that would be nice!). I'm referring to those vivid images of what you wanted to accomplish that once clouded your mental skies. Although dreams are often a part of our experience when we are young, somewhere in our latter years we tend to stop dreaming. As Picasso famously stated, “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once one grows up." What he was alluding to is the tendency many individuals have to constrict their creativity and downsize their dreams. Sometimes this occurs because of letdowns which drain us of the strength to dream. Drama, dissapointments,and delays can discourage us to continue dreaming. In addition, life also happens and causes our dreams to be deferred. On this journey, unintended items often show up on our itenarary causing us to lose focus of our dreams. In either case, today I want to encourage you to dream again! As Langston Hughes poetically proclaimed, "Hold fast to dreams for when dream die life is a broken winged-bird that bird that cannot fly!"

If anybody knew anything about dreams it had to be Joseph. The Bible says as a young person he had multiple dreams. Of course his dreams were Divinely designed to point him to his destiny. Although he had big dreams, the text let's us know he experienced plenty of drama! First of all, after sharing his dream with his brothers, the Bible says they hated him. Make a quick note to self;(Be careful who you share your dreams with!) Joseph also experienced the disappointment of being placed in a pit and sold into slavery by these same brothers who even declared, "Let's see what will happen to his dreams!". For years Joseph also dealt with the delays of living in Egypt as a slave and even as a prisoner. Through all of this, the above text reminds us that as a mature man, Joseph held fast to his dream and was able to live out his destiny. That's my word for you today, regardless of how your life has gone down or what has let you down, today dare to declare that you will dream again!

My prayer for you today is that God will give you the capacity and the confidence to dream again!

Love on Top!

"Thou hast left thy first love". Revelations 2:4

Oh the things one can find while moving!  Just the other day I ran across several items that had been missing for quite some time.  Of particular interest was a key, which I figured had gotten lost somewhere or had accidentally been thrown away.  To my suprise, the missing key had actually gotten misplaced and was beneath many other items.  Have you ever misplaced something of value? Maybe like me you have misplaced a key which has hindered you from opening some door, or getting to some desired destination.  My friend, the key I'm talking about today is called love.  It's possible for our love for God to get misplaced amidst a host of other things.  That's why it's vital that we keep our love on top!

In the above text, the risen Lord addresses this issue with the Church at Ephesus.  This was a church that was on the move and very busy (vs. 2-3).  After commending them for their positive qualities, Jesus points out one major problem that was ruining everything.  The problem in this church is the same problem that many believers experience today, leaving first love.  Do you remember when you were in first love with your Boo?  I'm talking about that time in your relationship when it didn't matter that you didn't have the best job or car, or that she couldn't cook. Why?  Because you were in love!  However as time passes, and kids are born, and we settle into regular routines, our first love somehow moves to twenty-first love!  When this happens our routines become more important than our relationship.   In the same way, we can become so busy going through our religious rituals and routines that we fail to make our relationship with God top priority. The word today is to find the misplaced key and get back to first love!

My prayer for you today is that you will make it a priority to keep your love on top!

You've got Back-up!

"Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them."  2 Kings 6:16

Have you ever been overwhelmed, outnumbered, or felt like the odds were against you?  I'm reminded of the story about a young boy named Billy who was often bullied on his way to school by a much bigger boy.  After having his lunch taken each day, Billy would come home feeling down and depressed, declaring never to return to school.  After finding out what was going on, Billy's big brother told him not to worry because he had a plan.  The next day as Billy made his way to school, he again encountered the bully.  However this time instead of giving in, to everyone's suprise he stood up to the bully.  As the bully moved in to show him who was in control, his laugh soon turned to a frown.  For from behind the bushes came Billy's bigger brother. Because of Billy's back-up the bully never bothered him again.

On this journey called life we often find ourselves battling things that are bigger than us.  These things cause us to feel overwhelmed, and outnumbered because the odds are seemingly against us.  Worse than this, we can become paralyzed with fear resolving not to move forward toward some desired destination.  In these times we are in desperate need for someone to help bring relief.  Today's text shows us that even when the odds are against us, we can overcome.  Though Elisha found himself seemingly outnumbered by an enemy army,  he did not fret or fear.  Why not?  Because he knew that he had back-up, an angelic army.  My friend, the good news today is that as believers we have back-up who is much bigger than what we are battling!  And if God be for us who can be against us?

My prayer for you today is that you will stand confidently knowing "Greater is He that is in you than he who is in the world!"

What do you see?

"Lord open his eyes so he can see" 2 Kings 6:17

The other day while riding down a familiar highway, I was surprised to see that a very nice community had developed there.  Why was I taken by surprise?  Well, mainly because the last time I encountered this area it was full of trees and woods.  However, now in this same place were grocery stores, restaurants and very large homes.  What had happened?  Someone looked beyond what they could see to envision brand new possibilities.  In essence they had a vision.

What do you see as it relates to your own life?  Do you feel it is currently covered with the canopies of circumstances, chaos, and conflicts?  Or, do you see what can happen by the power of God?  In the above text, the prophet Elisha and his servant found themselves surrounded by enemy forces.  As far as the eye could see, there were chariots and horses ready to fight against them.  However, as a visionary leader, Elisha saw what others could not see.  Beyond the enemy forces was an angelic host ready to fight for them!  I challenge you today to become a person of vision and see beyond what you can currently see!

My prayer for you today is that instead of focusing on the obstacles, that God would open your eyes so that you can see the opportunities that are available!

Stay on the Wall!

"I am doing a great work so that I cannot come down..."  Nehemiah 6:3

Do you have any  unfinished projects around the house?  If you are like me, you probably  have more than a couple!    You may ask, "Why are they unfinished?"  Well despite my noble plans, I somehow got distracted.    Have you ever gotten distracted while trying to do something good?  Please know that in your efforts to build something BIG,   the enemy will show up in a big way to discourage, distract, and detour you from your destiny!  He knows that if you finish what you are building that is Blessed, Impactful, and  Glorifies God, that the consequence will be something big!    How do you continue to construct while dealing with distractions?     In the above scripture,  the courageous contractor, Nehemiah, provides an excellent example of how to stay on the wall especially when you are tempted to come down.
  
In chapter six of the book that bears his name, Nehemiah was almost finished with his wall building campaign.  It was at this time that his enemies intensified their attacks against him.  This is when he employed an approach that allowed him to stay on the wall.  Utilize this approach to help you continue to build BIG plans, dreams, goals, plans. First, Nehemiah was able to discern his distractions. Please understand that distractions come in many forms, shapes, and sizes.  Some even seem to be good things, but they are not necessarily the best things.  The text suggests that even people can serve as distractions.  How true this is in a marriage or a ministry, a career or a church.  However, Nehemiah was able to discern his distractions and stay on the wall.  That's my word to you today.  Refuse to submit to whatever it is that's trying to discourage you and continue building BIG!

Do Something BIG!

What are you building that is BIG?  Does it have God's Blessing on it?  Is it making an Impact by blessing others?  Today I want to share the third essential element of doing something BIG,  which is, G- it Glorifies God.  What does it mean to glorify God?  Well it's as simple as 3 R's. We glorify God by- Recognizing His greatness, Reverencing or honoring Him in what we do, and Releasing all the credit to Him.  In essence our experience should be similar to the moon.  Did you know that the moon is basically a dark mass with no light?  However it does a great job of reflecting the light of the sun.  Simarly we are called to reflect the Son's light so that people see Him through what we do (Matthew 5:16).

However, sadly, many individuals make the mistake of thinking they are the star and believe it's all about them.  This same mentality and mindset is found in Genesus 11.  Here we find some people who wanted to build something BIG.  The Bible says that they wanted to build a tower that reached to heaven.  The text even says that because of their great communication (same speech), great collaboration (working together), and great creativity (using available resources) that they would have pulled it off had God himself not intervened.  You may ask, why did God intervene?  Well vs. 4 says that they were only interested in "making a name" for themselves.  They were not allowed to build something BIG because it wasn't for God's glory.   As you continue to construct whatever God has called you to do,  ask yourself, "Is this for my fame or His name?"  Make sure you do it BIG!
